NEWS: Our new Leamington Spa clinic is now open at Neal's Yard Remedies in Regent St.!

What is Osteopathy?

The way the body moves influences how it functions. Osteopaths use a gentle hands-on approach based on holistic principles and are highly specialised healthcare professionals recognised by the NHS as fully competent to diagnose and treat independently.

Nowadays osteopaths have an honours degree with at least 1000 hours supervised clinical practice. They are governed by the General Osteopathic Council, meaning that it’s illegal to use the title Osteopath if you haven’t undertaken formal training at one of the recognised schools.

Osteopaths are trained to diagnose in the same way as your GP and are specialists in problems of the musculoskeletal system. Patients visit with a variety of conditions from back or neck pain, sports injuries or headaches. Patients range from the very young to the very old, from pregnant mothers to people suffering from work stresses, pain or stiffness.

If we think the problem is to do with the skeleton, or muscular in nature then we will try to help with appropriate treatment. If we think it’s something that needs to be referred to another specialist we can help with referral by talking to your doctor if you wish.

About Tanya

Tanya Campbell B.Sc.(Hons), B.Sc.(Hons) Ost. has over ten years experience in osteopathy. She specialises in traditional structural methods, with use of cranial techniques.

Tanya studied Genetics at Newcastle University before spending ten years post graduate studies at the University of Adelaide. She trained in osteopathy at the British School of Osteopathy and graduated from Oxford Brookes University in 2009. She is trained in pilates and finds this useful to incorporate in her treatment of sports injuries and, in case of joint surgery, for prehabilitation and rehabilitation. Tanya has a particular interest in TMJ (jaw!) problems and will work closely with your dentist to alleviate headache and neck pain.

Patient Information

In order to diagnose your problem the osteopath will ask questions about
. The pain you’ve come about
. Your medical history
. Your lifestyle

Please print and fill in this form to bring with you to your first appointment (PDF). Everything you tell us is confidential!

You will be asked to undress down to your underwear. This is to give a clear view of the body and the way it moves. We will ask you to do some simple movements. Your diagnosis and appropriate treatment will then be discussed.
